A haven for culture

The unique charm of Cuckmere Haven has made it a muse for painters, writers, photographers and filmmakers from across the world for many years. The thriving artistic culture of this idyllic spot continues to grow with an annual music festival attracting international performers, a writer-in-residence programme, and regular events, arts festivals and historical tours throughout the year.

Cuckmere Haven might now be a tranquil bay for walkers, artists, nature lovers and more, but its history is rather more adventurous. Its location on the Sussex coast gave Cuckmere Haven a pivotal role in the battles against the smuggling trade of the early 19th century and in protecting Britain during the World Wars.

The Bloody-nosed Beetle and the Chalkhill Blue butterfly are just some of the wildlife that call Cuckmere Haven home. The West Beach and Short Cliff are within the Seaford Head Nature Reserve, which has a number of rare grassland sites, chalk scrub and specialised chalk loving plants, as well as over 200 different species of bird.

“Our county’s postcard to the globe. The view across the Coastguard Cottages to the Seven Sisters and the distant Belle Tout is one of the finest panoramas in the UK: epic cinematic, timeless and very English.”

Robert Veitch, Sussex Living Magazine
